Build a Mac for $350
Posted 9 months, 3 weeks ago at 1:21 pm. 155 comments
Yesterday, while still anxiously awaiting for new MacBook Pro (which are now rumored for either the 5th or 12th), I built a hackintosh with Leopard. How? I will show you.
First thing to do is get the parts for our hackintosh. For this project I used a shuttle barebones system system because of the size.
Here are the specs:
We are not getting a video card because the motherboard that comes with the Shuttle has a built-in Intel GMA950 which is the same graphics that the previous rev. of MacBooks used and therefore are supported by Leopard out of the box anyways.
Great, build it. If you have never built a computer before, it is pretty straight foward. The Shuttle comes with a guide anyways not to mention all the guides available on the internet.
Once you have it built it is time to install Leopard. You will need the Kalyway Leopard DVD to install it. Get it through this torrent would be the easiest option. Burn it to a DVD with ISO Recorder or a program of your choice. You will also need a few drivers for the ethernet and sound. I have packaged them together. Download here. You can put those files on a CD, flash drive, or external hard drive.
Now we are all set. Boot the Shuttle up and put the Leopard DVD you burned in. I didn’t have to change any big setting in the BIOS, however you might want to set the date and time and stuff by pressing the delete key when the Shuttle logo comes up. Otherwise, boot from the DVD. It will show a text message that says “Loading Darwin” for a few minutes if you burnt the DVD correctly. It will then turn to a gray screen. It takes a while to boot the DVD so be patient while this boots. Select the language of your choice when it comes up. Next, go to the utilities menu and go to disk utility. Create a new partition by clicking on your hard drive on the left, then going to the partition tab. Select 1 partition and name it “Leopard.” You can actually name this anything you want, it is what the hard drive icon on your desktop will be labeled, just make sure it is ONE word and contains NO SPACES. There is a glitch where if it is more than one word, the OS will not boot. Also, go to options and make sure GUID is checked. Make sure the format is ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled).’ Now apply it. Once it is done, close out of the disk utility. Pass through the next couple screens click Agree, and then on the next screen click the ‘Customize’ button. A screen like this will pop up.
Follow those settings, and let ‘er install!
Assuming the install went ok, it should restart when it is finished. When it turns on, take the DVD out and let it boot from the HD. It should boot Leopard! This first boot takes a little longer than usual and has some set-up that it has you do. Do what it asks in then it will take you to your brand new desktop. Lets waste no time! You may notice your internet isn’t working, either is the sound, and the resolution is a little funky too.
Let’s fix the resolution first. Go to the settings icon (It’s the one on the dock that has a bunch of gears), and go to ‘displays.’ Change the resolution to the max. Now it should look better.
Put in the flash drive/cd/external hard drive and look at the files. First lets install the audio patch. Unzip the AppleHDAPatcher now drag the text file ALC888-a.txt ontop of that crazy icon. It should patch the sound. Now we will fix the ethernet. Spotlight ‘kext’ and you should see ‘kextHelper’ come up. Open it. Drag the skge.kext to the white box in the KextHelper, it should add it in, type in you’re password and click ‘Easy Install’ or what ever it says. It should pop a message up saying to cross your fingers and restart. Restart. Once you are booted back in, got to the settings again and this time click network. Configure the stuff there. DNS servers seems to frustrate a lot of people, so in there put 4.2.2.1. Its a public DNS server that most people tend to like. You can also put your gateway which is usually something like 192.168.1.1.
That was easy, wasn’t it? Your hackintosh should now work 100%! If something doesn’t work, or I missed something, write a comment!
Another helpful resource is the InsanelyMac Forums. They are usually quick to get back, and have tons of drivers if you are building something different than the specs I used.
Happy hackintosh-ing!

is there an add on Firewire card that would work with this?
Hey man. Just wanted to comment. I see your top advertisement has a border. I heard more clicks are generated without borders. Maybe I am wrong though.
Nice article I am going to try this when I get my tax return
I’d really love to see some builds of different Hackintosh ‘puters. Went on Insanely Mac Forums, but there doesn’t seem to be many such builds. Thanks for this one!
your terrible muriel..
what does your casing look like? how did you enclose all of the parts? is there a way to purchase just the apple casing? please email me at gregpassuntino@gmail.com.
thanks,
greg
hey, that sounds awesome. have you run a lot of the mac apps on it with a lot of success? any problems you’ve run into?
very interesting.
I’m assuming you aren’t using a wireless card? If you are, please do tell, that’s the only thing I would need working in order to do this. Thanks! Great post!
WIll this work with slightly better models of the same items. ANd will it work if I buy a
will it work if I buy an OSX Leopard build from Apple?
That’s pimp.
What memory setup do you recommend if you want tu upgrade the RAM, and how BIG can you go.. thanks
Great guide, I’ve been considering making small budget hacintosh and this might be the solution!
Thanks.
Can you use any CPU or does it have to be the Celeron for the Cheap Mac Build? If you can use bigger chip what is max that I should go with for that shuttle board?
Thanks,
Shane
How about the keyboard? Should it be a mac keyboard or a pc keyboard?
This may be a dub ? - - would this system be upgradeable with off the shelf OS upgrades?
Impressive. Only thing missing is wifi/bluetooth? (ooh, and 2GB RAM is max? - ouch)
Does this tutorial work on every hardware?
Cause that would mean that I could run OS X on a second partition of my Windows machine.
Stop asking him questions and do research for yourself. No this will not work with retail OS X from Apple. Thats why its a “Hackintosh”. The hack version will boot/run the installer on other systems and has the DRM checks removed from it. I’ll be nice and give you a clue.. http://www.osx86project.org/
Do this for the lutz, not to save money.
If you do not have exactly the right parts on hand, you will still need to buy hardware. Doing the math, and assuming you purchase Leopard and iLife, building from scratch only saves you $36 over a base retail Mini Mac!
Do you have any knowledge if I can upgrade the CPU to ‘ Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale 2.2GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor ‘ and still have it work? Can you tell if the Mother board can deal with that CPU?
Thanks!
so could i build a mac with an AMD chip too?
or only intel chips?
any x86 right?
hate to be the nay-sayer…but isn’t this basically just a less sleek, slim, or attractive looking Mac-Mini? not to mention No warranty?
i mean….i can get a mac-mini with the same specs for like 150 bucks more.
figure out how to build an iHack or Hackbook Pro or PowerHack…then we’ll talk
The problem with these kind of instructions is that it is too technical for the average user. Which is why Mac always has a market I guess.

Dude, that is AWESOME!!!
Great info and great links on where to buy. Gotta try it.
Click on the price for the shuttle and it takes you to NewEgg where you can check out the Shuttle. Very interesting. Plain Jane but kinda attractive. Has firewire and the artwork on the box reminds me of the early Mac graphics. Pity that space is wasted on those antiquated PS2 ports.
How much of this violates the Apple EULA. Leopard is licensed to run on official Apple hardware and what you’re doing is not legal.
Lets see.
No warranty.
No Wireless
No Software Updates
Slower
And you save about $150
Wow.
Must be some real cheap people in the world.
You get worse hardware, no support, no updates, and something that looks ugly as hell.
You save about as much as an old PS2 or decent DVD player costs
/golfclap
@Bubba:
It’s quite updatable, and have you seen the specs on whatever Mac you’re comparing this to (mini perhaps?) vs the specs on this? Quite different. This setup from Apple, if it existed, would cost way more.
@bubba
actually, you could put an extra 50-75 bucks into this build, and build a machine that will HAMMER the mini. how?
1 - toss an e2160 in there and overclock it to 2.4 or 2.5ghz
2 - the hard drive is already way better than the mini 80gb 4200rpm piece of garbage
3 - upgrade to 2 gigs of ram for another 20 bucks, doubling the mini
4 - and finally, any 16x dvd burner you want. and the low end mini has no dvd burner.
5 - i’m betting there’s at least 1 decent wireless card that will work for around 20 bucks.
and there you have it, for less than 450.00 you just built a mac that’s far, far superior to even the 799.00 mini, let alone the 599.00 mini.
Nice article, i have similar setup already with a SD32G2 Shuttle and a E6600, think i might give it a go. The driver package download is not working though, any chance of putting it else where?
Dan…The Drivers download works. You need to right-click and save link as…
I bought all of this hardware and installed it using that torrent, and everything works perfectly. After installation I turned off updates and haven’t had a problem, the OS installed in about 10 minutes tops. FAST!! Thanks for this!!!
Excellent, I have been waiting for a sub $400 mac for awhile now. This is the answer for me. I already purchased Leopard and now I a awaiting my Shuttle and the guts of the system to be delivered. I used 100% canadian web sources for the purchase and my total cost with shipping etc… was under $420 CDN after taxes. Not bad.
Hi All. I know this isn’t tech support or anything, but I just built this and seem to be having difficulty with the LAN driver. I’ve followed the directions (several times, and redownloaded the file form here). Besides dragging the skge.kext “brick” to the ApplePatcher, is there anything else I’m missing? It keeps telling me “detected unsupported Codec.”
Any ideas would be appreciated. Sound works great!
Thanks!
Nevermind… Just missed a step in your directions. Thanks for the great guide!!
Sweet I just bought the parts and can’t wait to try my first Mac
I’d be able to put a graphics card in myself right?
This worked surprisingly well! With Kalway, you need to unzip and burn to DVD on a Mac since Windows won’t understand the file structure and will complain that the .iso is corrupted. I purchased Leopard when it came out but decided not to install it on my PPC G5, which is still running Tiger.
One thing you should add to your shopping cart above is a second SATA cable since you won’t get one for the HDD or the DVD if you purchase from newegg and the Shuttle only comes with one cable (but, thankfully, two ports). So I picked one up last night for $20 from Best Buy.
This OS requires a *USB* keyboard and mouse so pick those up too if you don’t have them.
I’m wondering now, though, whether I should run the security update from Apple? Anyone try that? I haven’t because I’m afraid that will break something. Also, I recommend disabling the sleep option because it doesn’t seem to come back once it is asleep (requires a reboot).
Installed iLife ‘08 and iWork ‘08. Both appear to work fine (even with updates). Next, I’m going to try installing a dual monitor video card (if I can find the right drivers) and Parallels; if those work, I may start using this as my main computer for a while. Thanks!
If I build one of these do I have to install Windows first (before installing Lepord)?
Can anyone tell me the differance between the Shuttle SD30G2 and Shuttle SD30G2B?
Thanks!
Hey,
I bought this shuttle and the cd/dvd drive for $200.00 I already have extra cpu/ram/hard drives. Yes, I have to illegally download leopard os x, but I have already purchased a copy.
If this works for only $200 out of my pocket, I think it will make a nice extra machine. I don’t need the entire “mac” experience as many have stated above for this cheap of a price.
I already own a macbook, macbook pro, and a mac mini.
Wyatt
after it showed the gray screen (with apple’s logo in the center), it stopped working. I always get the same problem everytime I restart. Tried “-v” and “vanilla” after F8, but it didn’t make any difference.
Btw, my processor is Intel Quad Core 2.4GHz, intel motherboard G33 with on-board VGA and sound card. At BIOS setting, I set my USB external drive (empty) to be the first harddrive.
Any one has a clue? Thanks!
didnt work for me i just get a apple with a line thru the circle after it boots and loads, why is this happening, what to email me or something??
Hey guys,
Is there a way to burn the torrent to an iso on a windows PC? I unzipped the file but as I was kinda expected its for mac/unix…
please email me at jptocker@gmail.com if you have a work around.
Cheers,
Hey,
I’m running an Intel E6750 on an ASUS P5B Deluxe.
Is it possible to run OS X on this hardware too?
Thanks for answer,
Anonym
I built a configuration almost exactly like this one used the same Shuttle setup just a different processor. I’m wondering if you have had any luck with installing the 10.5.2 update just from Software Update or did you have to install it from the DMG?
I know people love OSX for doing video work. If I build one of these how do I get the video into the computer. I assume I need to add a firewire card. Does anyone have one working? Also, how about High Def 1080i input?
Just built one of these and everything worked perfectly except the sound. I’m a newbie to Mac so I’m still trying to get up to speed on debugging tools.
I tried the auto-update to 10.5.2 and it wouldn’t boot anymore. Had to go back to square one and reinstall everything.
Got iWork and Parallels to install fine. Next will try Office 2008.
Oh, I put a 2.2Ghz Core Duo in and 2GB RAM, no problem.
Kalyway has released a 10.5.2 update .dmg that you can download here:
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4024028/kalyway_hack_10.5.2ComboUpdate
and updated kernel: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4024497/10.5.2_kernel_vanilla__and_patched__
1) Use the hacked combo installer to update to 10.5.2 , see mac part of this site.
2) Reboot and repair permissions.
3) Install the new kernel with Kalyway’s kernel package. = this file.
4) Reboot.
5) Do the graphics update from apple.
Nice Site!
still doesnt, can get any help on forums!!! and i cant even update the bios because the version i have is SD30S1A2 and that doesnt even exist on the shuttle website site, OMG PLZ HELP ME!!!
What ppl ALWAYS miss is that Mac Mini sucks…
It is only a thrash bin of obsolete hardware
250GB 7,200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
against a shitty 5.400 one for example ?
Of course, if you add RAM, external hard drive…
Apple make horrible prices
Compare the hardware AND price instead of just speaking about stupid “Mac experience”
Mac mini sucks, as much as all Apples compared to PC…but wait…Apples ARE PC !!!
Get the most similar hardware and you will get the most similar “experience”
Personaly, i just don’t care :
my next comp will be hackintosh with triple boot OSX,XP and Linux
OSX is just a hardware dongle limited OS
And Linux is going to eat it’s face…
I have already ordered the parts to build this system. My only question is, Has anyone figured out what wireless adapter will be compatible with this build?
Nice! Thanks!
Anthony
dont worry about that, i dont think youll get it working like many other couldnt…i would just get a mac mini instead
Would it not be wiser to buy a IDE DVD drive and save the additional SATA connection for a additional drive ???
Mr E
OK, the sound does work, just not through the headphone jack in the front of the shuttle. I guess I’ll have to read the Shuttle doc to figure that out.
I upgraded to 10.5.2 like WW outlined in post 62. Everything went great with the upgrade. I then ran the Graphics update and it seemed to go well except it now only has the 1024×768 resolution instead of all the choices. I’m running on a 1680×1050 monitor, so it looks strange.
Anyone know how to fix this or to back out the upgrade? I checked over on InsanelyMac but didn’t really see any answer besides putting in the Tiger GMA 950 kext which I don’t have.
Other than that, it’s a blast. I but in iWork, iLife, Adobe Creative Suite, etc and everything works well.
I hear that the built in graphics aren’t the greatest. So would it be possible to put in a different graphics card? Can you suggest one that’s good for video editing?
Yes,
You can do that. Just get drivers from insanelymac.com
ok, so i found out none of the sata drives, worked, thats why i was getting a apple with a line thru it
i use ide and can install, but now i how i dont get stuck at the keyboard loopback..
so why the sata dvd & hd worked for you i have no clue..
ok so
when thru installed, it boots up to efi, then reboots the pc, why? what now?! and yes i took the disc out, and i get no errors, it just reboots really fast at that point..
Very Nice! Thanks!
ok, it not working with 10.5.2 updated and used NVinject 0.2.1 for chaintech nvidia geforce 7300gs full hardware working and rez.
why i cant use sata like wildwobby can, i dunnoo
Nice Site! Thanks!
If I choose Kalyway 10.5.2 from the start, should the patches still be applied at installation as recomended in the original post? -j
My ASROCK M/B works OK. However, my Asus P5K-V M/B throws me “System Config File “/com.apple.boot.plist” Not Found…. Must be a BIOS Setting?
first off, thanks wildwobby for this great step by step build. The only problem im having is finding a way to connect to my wireless network in my house. money isnt a issue, so any way possible ill take it. Any answers would be appreciated.
thanks again.
chuck, im no experienced builder, but i think i got that msg wen i burned the iso wrong on the dvd. maybe try a new install disk?
nicebuildbut,
From:
http://tinylink.com/?eZfsPHBwmL
It says that this card:
http://tinylink.com/?oKKImmFGNR
is recognized as an airport and will work with no patches what so ever.
Good luck with the Mac!
wow, thanks for the fast response and (hopefully) the perfect solution. After this build i am truly a fan of wildwobby. thanks again.
I was checking this out and its something i would like 2 do but if i bought a copy of OS X would it work or does yours have a crack to make it use non apple hardware?
I used an ECS mobo with a intel 2 gig duo cost me all of $88, then 667 2 gig ram for $60 a 250g sata drive $80, an old case I had with two cd/dvd drives (free), an LG dvd dl rw $30 and a used dlink wireless card $20 and a 512ddr ATI2600 pro vid $99. I used the utility after boot and 20 minutes later my new apple was asking for the password to my wireless network. About the same price $350. So easy a windows user can do it! I have 1024x 768 res so I do need to get some drivers for the card but um, its not that hard…
wildwobby,
installed the internal wireless card u recommended and booted up the system. it is recognized as airport as you said it would. the only problem is everytime i try to connect to a wireless network it states…”connect to network…” then “Connection failed” Any help would be greatly appriciated. ill keep pluggin away.
thanks again,
nicebuild
restarted, took the wep password off, connected and made sure everything work. enabled wep password, and sure enough it connect. dont know wut the problem was, but everything is working great. thanks again wildwobby.
5 star build.
Ok, My shuttle is here, my memory is here, and my cpu e4500 is here. I tried to use uTorrent to get the http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3940886/KALYWAY_LEOPARD_10.5.1_intel_SSE2_and_SSE3 and it took 8 or more hours to download. Now I read that there is a new one. Can you point me to a version that is the full iso?
ken, that is the correct and original kalyway download. On post 62, wildwobby easy explains and links the correct and updated version. goodluck wiht the build and install.
2 problems. I am using Utorent and when I add URL of the URL in 62 it says invalid link.
Other: I have installed the ISO recorder for Vista32 but it does not make an exe that I can run? Any help!
ken, i dont know if you’ve ever used a torrent client, but u need to download the torrent itself, and open the torrent with the program Utorrent. that means click the link, click on “download this torrent” and thats your downloaded torrent.
I got a
GA-945GCMX-S2 motherboard,
1 GB DDRII PC 5300 667mhz,
160GB & 80GB S-ATA HD,
Core 2 DUO E6750 [2.66GHZ],
Dual Layer DVD RW,
Does that console anyone????
Try to contact me on miiaiid@miiaiid.com
I installed the 10.5.2 “Update” and the new Kernel, Then I installed the “Graphics” update from apple, Now I only get 1024X768 Screen Resolution? Any Ideas…. Otherwise everything is VERY GOOD!
Does anyone else get (seemingly) random kernel panics when scrolling in Safari? I also have lockups on shut down from time to time. It’ll just hang in the shut down process and never actually turn off. Otherwise it works well
yeah, ive experienced the shut down stall before, but i usually just hold the power button and power everything off. Doesnt seem to bother ne thing so far…
Thanks, Nicebuild. Any Kernel Panics yet? I’m wondering whether I installed the wrong kernel patch…
np bryan,
I’ve got nothing about the kernel panics so far, but im afraid to upgrade to the 10.5.2 update. maybe if i do that then those problems will diminish. r u using .1 or .2?
We made the Hackintosh following your directions, and it is SO awesome. We went with a 500 Gig Hard drive, and now I want to install Vista as well. everything I have read says we need Boot Camp. Yet when we fire up Boot Camp, we get a error message. It says we need an update, so how do we update it?
Secondly, we’ve installed all the suggested updates and our output of sound is great. We think our microphone-in isn’t working well. How should we fix that?
Thanks!
Nicebuild - I’m using 10.5.2 without the video update. That broke my resolutions (nothing but 1024×768), so I did a reinstall.
i used this guide (and some upgrades) and it worked great! thanks so much!
is there anyway you could update it for kalyway 10.5.2? I dont think there are any major differences but just a revision and comments would be great. Thanks again for the guide. Hackintosh FTW!!!
using the card that was recommended (the asus wl-138g v2) i had to do some kext editing to get it working with kalyway 10.5.2… it is now recognized as an Airport Extreme!… woot!… if you want details let me know…
Options? We don’t got no stinking options!
Seriously, I went into disk utility, erased the drive as MacOS Extended Journaled, but I don’t see any options to check GUID. Unless you mean in the customize screen, which comes after all that. What am I missing?
OK, I was erasing the drive instead of formatting, but I’ve now got a mostly working system. It dies when put to sleep, and it will not recognize the network. I’ve run kext helper 3 times, and it doesn’t even see the ethernet port. Any ideas?
gwhenning, i am running 10.5.1 and my system will not wake up when put to sleep, and has problems shutting down sometimes. Besides those 2, inconvinces i am using the wireless card wildwobby suggested flawlessly and my system has yet to crash or actually do anything that is out of the ordinary. if u have ne specific questions im sure someone will be more than willing to help you on this build…
Hi,
i am downloading the torrent, and once i have that i am going to order the hardware. i noticed on the torrent link it said only 512mb of ram for this copy of leopard. that doesnt make since to me. can i use the whole gig and upgrade to 2?
ryan, i am running 10.5.1 and am using 2 gigs of ram. i believe the 512mb is just a minimum recommendation for the OS.
nicebuild.
I just read this neat areticle. http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/os/0,1000001098,39415279-1,00.htm they talk about a new iso called Leo4All v3.
I have not been able to find a place to download it. Can you find a spot?
nice instructions. i got mine up and running, and it’s working like a champ - except for one thing. the sound.
i followed your directions, and during the patch things seemed alright, but i still don’t get any sound.
wait wait wait a minute… i think i disabled the sound in the bios because i had an external sound card when this was a winxp machine. lemme give that a shot right now. i hope that’s the problem.
that was the problem.
everything’s workin’ great now.
I have it installed on a computer but not the one you gave us to buy. well the internet and the sound dont work and idk if you know how to can get it to work or anything to work really… but i tryed everything
I am posting this from my new $350 Hackintosh. The build went completely to plan, no issues whatsoever. I stepped up and got 2gb of RAM and a 750gb hard drive, though.
Very happy with how it went.
gameon,
if you could include more details about what is not working…details of your computer components..etc, im sure someone will be able to help you, but its hard to help with no information.
nicebuild.
I built a SD30G2 Shuttle Hackintosh too. Great machine.
Anyone try to do the Kalyway 10.5.3 hackintosh update that came out today?
Would it be compatible still with ASRock Wolfdale1333-D667? Instead of buying the barebones jsut the mobo and using a shuttle case I already have.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157119
the ASRock Wolfdale1333-D667 looks like it should work… the video will work and and audio is supported to along with all the other specs(its almost the same as the shuttle motherboard)… id buy it…
Thanks Tyler, This saved me a few bucks and now I can have something to do with this old case. =]
does anyone know if an e2180 would work with this instead of the e1200 cpu?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116052
The e2180 will work just fine. I used the e2200 which clocks in at 2.2 ghz and it works AMAZINGLY.
I was successful with the parts list installing osx86 10.5.1. When I installed 10.5.3 combo update today now I am only given 1024 x 768 display no other choices. I see many people having issues with the intel 950 display chip with osx 10.5.2 and 10.5.3. So far I have not discovered the fix.
one more word of advice: you need a sata cable for the hard drive, and go ahead and get that second gig of memory it’s only $20
alan, funny you say that because ive done the same exact thing for ur 2nd comment. I am still very afraid of updating to 10.5.3. is it worth it?
thanks, nice build.
nice build
Nothing that is meaningful changed so far as I can tell other than the display resolution limiting. I have a time machine icon on the top menu bar, that’s about it.
One last comment on the instructions above, you need a mac to burn the image of kalyway. I was unsuccessful in burning on a pc.
thanks alan. i dont back my computer up any way so im prolly going to just continue to use 10.5.1.
Fixed my problem. I was reading a lot of forms about kext files. in particular appleintigratedframebuffer.kext. So I looked in system, library, extensions, and sure enough, the file was from yesterday at the time I ran the 10.5.3 combo updater (kalyway). So I used time machine to put the old one back from before the upgrade and it fixed my display so I can have all the resolutions again.
READ THIS!!!
For those of you with problems concerning the video (getting wrong resolutions and such), you need to install the proper kext. I have uploaded the kext i used (it works) and use kexthelper from the driver package listed in the guide to install it. Simply drag it onto kexthelper and provide your password and hit easy install. Reboot when its done and you should have proper resolutions available. Here is the link to the kext. Good luck!
http://rapidshare.com/files/121464887/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext.zip.html
anyone get the kalyway 10.5.3 update to work? let me know how if you did please… ive have to reinstall twice… kernel panic on reboot… thanks
Ok, so after a couple restores from time machine (which is pretty freaking cool btw), i finally found the RIGHT way to update and I should have seen it all along… use the Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update and simply follow the readme… its very easy… install the combo update… DONT REBOOT… install the kernel via his package… use vanilla kernel since u use vanilla if u followed this guide… restart… when darwin asks u for boot options… hit a key and then when the prompt appears… type “update -v” without the quotes… it should show some text then reboot… let it do its thing from here on out and u should be booted into 10.5.3… this update breaks the video kext a couple posts up… so use kext helper b7 to reinstall it… reboot… and VOILA!!!!… 10.5.3… GET SOME!!
haha, nice work tyler durden, but i am still using 10.5.1. and the only question i have is, Is it worth it to upgrade to 10.5.3?? is there that big of a difference?
thanks,
nicebuildbut.
i havent noticed any difference from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3… but there were some security issues resolved from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2… I personally like having the most up to date system available… apple sucks at disclosing details on their updates so im not sure on the specifics… good luck
My hackintosh works very well, however shut down sometimes hangs, and sleep crashes it. Any ideas for these issues? Has anyone got sleep to work?
I finally found this fix:http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/2008/03/ooo-possible-fix-for-command-timed-out.html
in case anyone else is having the issue.
Tyler D.: yup, your directions in post #131 worked like a charm. Awesome, awesome, awesome! Now my laser printer works perfectly with my hackintosh. I have ZERO complaints about it, it works as well or better than my MacBook!
I just built one
everything works like magic except will only boot from cd, not HDD
I think its cause my HDD is old (not sata)
@ Jim:
did you tweak the bios settings? you should be able to get it to boot from IDE hard drives as opposed to sata hard drives… im almost 100% positive as I have an old 160 GB IDE running as a my time machine drive and when I was tweaking the bios settings, it was trying to use the IDE to boot… write back if you have success/problems
This is the bomb…added another harddrive and put ms xppro on it. Now, if I need microscraps , I got it, otherwise I got a hacckle that works great and very cost effective.
@ Tyler D
I tried the bios stuff but nothing changed.
@ Jim
u have to change the priority to boot from Hard Drive first, and then there is a separate setting to choose which hard drive you want to boot off of… (i have an ide and sata drive installed and i can boot off either)… if that doesnt work… i dont know what the problem is
for those interested, iatkos has released a 10.5.4 version that works VERY WELL with the above configuration… if u follow the instructions above and slightly modify for the iatkos install, you will be happy and up-to-date…
Tyler: I tried iatkos 4.1 and it still didn’t recognize the SATA controller. Is there some sort of modification that needs to be made.
Anyone try to update from 10.5.3 to 10.5.4? This link says all you have to do is do a plain old software update through the OS itself and it will work. But I would love to know someone else has tried it already:

I plan to use this setup for a recording studio. Is there a site that lists compatible sound cards?
Can someone recommend an inexpensive video card to add to this. I build this hackintosh for my wife. She loves it. We just want to upgrade the video.
DanITMan, negative… check the drivers during setup but i’m almost 100% certain i didnt do anything for the sata… iatkos 10.5.4 was a breeze… good luck!
I just did a normal install and booted the iatkos 10.5.4 disk. Do I need to do anything special on the boot?
you can use iatkos full vanilla install and just patch the sound and add the lan driver
Anyone try to update 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 yet?
Anyone else have this problem with their hackintosh: the cursor trails? When I move the cursor, often an image of the cursor remains in its former location while the ‘active’ cursor that I control moves around. After a few seconds or if I refresh the page it is on (browser or app), it disappears.
Not a big deal since I’ve gotten used to it. But it is the one thing that I have found on my hackintosh that doesn’t work as expected.
TIA!
I noticed that model of iShuttle is not being carried anymore. Can you use another model with the same results? What’s the significance was it just price on your part?
You can find a shuttle on Msn Shopping thats where I found one. One question before i buy everything, can I use a wireless card thats listed on the hardware compatability list on the osx86 wiki?
You guys who cant burn the dvd, download the latest puppylinux. It will do it, no complaints. You may even forget about Leopard,or window$ for that matter! Download is les than 100meg, burn iso to cd, run it live, runs entirely in ram, so remove cd, download, burn, way you go
